Spanish is spoken by approximately 400 million people natively, making Spanish the second most spoken language by number of native speakers after Chinese. Spanish is the official language of Spain, most Latin American countries, and one of the official languages of Equatorial Guinea, in Africa. In total, twenty-five nations and territories use Spanish as their primary language. It is also one of six official working languages of the United Nations. It is also the second most widely spoken language in the United States and by far the most popular studied foreign language in U.S. schools and universities.

Learning Spanish can expand your access to more and better jobs, open your understanding of other cultures, and even enhance your grasp of English because a large part of English vocabulary is based on Latin-roots shared with Spanish. At UT, there are a variety of courses offered in Spanish at every level of instruction including accelerated courses. Students can major and minor in Spanish.
