Curriculum

SAI provides a wide range of curriculum materials to support the inclusion of quality content on South Asia in K-12 classrooms.  Many of these materials have been developed through support from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant. All lesson plans developed by SAI are available for download free of charge here.

Hemispheres Global Curriculum Units

SAI also works collaboratively to create cross-regional educational materials through Hemispheres, the international outreach consortium at the University of Texas at Austin. Hemispheres curriculum units allow for comparative study of global trends and issues across regions in middle and high school social studies classrooms. Units are modular and include background information, primary source readings, maps, worksheets, and activities.   • 15 Minute History — A podcast series devoted to short, accessible discussions of important topics in world history and U.S. history drawn directly from the TEKS, and featuring supplemental resources and primary documents for each episode. The discussions are conducted by the award-winning faculty and graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin as part of a collaboration between Hemispheres and Not Even Past, a website produced by the UT Department of History that contains articles on a wide variety of historical issues. 
  • Asia Society — A nonpartisan, nonprofit educational institution that works to strengthen relationships and promote understanding among the people, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the United States. Its Center for Global Education provides lesson plans, scholarly essays, primary resources, and curriculum to build student global competence and understanding of Asia and the world.  You'll also find how-to guides on a range of topics, from starting a service-learning program, an international journalism club, a critical language program, and much more. 
  • Facing History and Ourselves — A non-profit teacher professional development organization that “examin[es] racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.”
  • Primary Source — Primary Source is an educational nonprofit organization that works to advance global learning in schools. They have an excellent resource guide on South Asia where you can find recommendations for books, films, and websites for teaching about the countries of South Asia.
  • South Asia Book Award — Curriculum and other resources created by members of the South Asia National Outreach Consortium (SANOC).
