Lyon Summer Program
The program provides students the opportunity to live and study in France for seven weeks (corresponding to the first summer session), to develop French language skills and experience a different cultural environment. Students earn six credit hours for two courses.

“Sustainable Cinema in Italy” is a maymester program directed by the Department of French and Italian of the University of Texas at Austin in cooperation with 24FPS, a community of filmmakers, artists, and educators in Parma, Italy. The program provides students the opportunity to live and study in Italy for three weeks and earn 3 credit hours.

Dr. Elizabeth Mayne
Dr. Liz Mayne, Lecturer, received her PhD in French Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 2020. She has been teaching French in person and online at UT Austin since 2014. She is a contributing author on the project Connexions francophones: Identités culturelles et linguistiques. Liz is currently the supervisor of FR 317C Enhancing French Skills, the “bridge” course from lower- to upper-division French. As such, she is focused on collaborating with her colleagues in developing effective methods to guide learners to higher levels of proficiency. Liz is particularly interested in using technology and multimedia in the classroom, and has attended many workshops and given presentations on teaching language with technology. She is looking forward to teaching a new course this spring, FR 351C French Through Comedy.

Nina Kirkegaard is a second-year PhD student in French Studies. After completing her BA and MA in French Studies at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, she moved to Austin to pursue doctoral studies. Her work during her master's degree focused on Stéphane Mallarmé's 1874 fashion and lifestyle magazine, La Dernière Mode, as well as 19th century authors' maisons d'écrivains. Her current research interests include archival research, 19th century French literature, maisons d'écrivains and writers of the Latin American Boom. She is a Graduate Research Assistant in Instruction at the Harry Ransom Center.

Alessandro was born in Venezuela and is a descendant of an Italian World War II refugee. Escaping political persecution, Alessandro and his family relocated to Houston in 2019 upon being granted asylum. Inspired by his background, Alessandro exhibits an unrelenting commitment for the study of humanitarian migration, especially in Latin America and the Mediterranean. In 2022, Alessandro was admitted to the University of Texas at Austin and is currently a candidate for the degrees of Government and Italian Studies, B.A. Alessandro aspires to attend law school and pursue a career as an immigration lawyer. His pastimes include cooking, playing the violin, and reading books about politics.
