Minors
Beginning with the 2016-18 Undergraduate Catalog, we offer three transcript-recognized minors. All three minors are automatically approved for any regularly enrolled UT student who may wish to declare them. You can declare the minors through the Registrar's online minor and certificate application system. However, if you are following an undergraduate catalog prior to 2016-18, you are not eligible for these transcript-recognized minors. Students in earlier undergraduate catalogs should refer to their assigned academic advisor to review their options for minoring.
Classical Studies Minor
The Classical Studies minor is most suited for students with a general interest in the history, culture, and language of Classical Greece and Rome. This minor provides students with introductory exposure to either Greek or Latin and the ability to choose from the breadth of our department's offerings in classical civilization and history. The Classical Studies minor requires 17 hours including:
- GK 506 or LAT 506
- 12 hours of Classical Civilization (C C), AHC 319, AHC 325, or AHC 378, including at least six hours upper-division
- Coursework applied toward the minor must include at least nine hours in residence.
Although a minor in Classical Studies does not guarantee access to specific courses, very few GK, LAT, C C, or AHC courses are reserved. A number of upper-division C C and AHC courses have upper-division standing as a prerequisite. Some seats in AHC 378 are reserved for majors; this class would generally not be recommended until you have completed several other C C or AHC courses. If you encounter any difficulty registering for courses for the Classical Studies minor, you may contact the Academic Advisor for assistance.
Greek Minor
The Greek minor is suited for those students who are interested in Greek language and literature. The Greek minor requires 19 hours including:
- GK 506
- GK 507
- GK 311
- GK 312K
- GK 324
- Coursework applied toward the minor must include at least 10 hours in residence.
Although a minor in Greek does not guarantee access to specific courses, in general, GK courses are not restricted and generally have ample seats to meet demand. If you encounter any difficulty registering for courses for the Greek minor, you may contact the Academic Advisor for assistance. Students wishing to complete the Greek minor who have completed a non-standard introductory Greek sequence (examples: summer intensive Greek, Greek courses in transfer with varying hours) may need to meet with the Academic Advisor to discuss options.
Latin Minor
The Latin minor is suited for those students who are interested in Latin language and literature. The Latin minor requires 18 hours including:
- LAT 506
- LAT 507
- LAT 511K
- LAT 322
- Coursework applied toward the minor must include at least 9 hours in residence.
Although a minor in Latin does not guarantee access to specific courses, in general, LAT courses are not restricted and generally have ample seats to meet demand. If you encounter any difficulty registering for courses for the Latin minor, you may contact the Academic Advisor for assistance. Credit-by-exam in Latin is available from the UT-Austin, AP, IB, and SAT Subject tests in Latin, and may apply toward the minor, as long as the student also meets the minimum 10 hours in residence requirement for the minor. Students wishing to complete the Latin minor who have completed a non-standard introductory Latin sequence (examples: LAT 311/312K instead of LAT 511K, LAT 601C, Latin courses in transfer with varying hours) may need to meet with the Academic Advisor to discuss options.
