Minors and Certificates

 

The Department of Asian Studies offers nine transcript-recognized minors (eight langauge minors and the Asian Religions Minor) and one certificate (Japanese). The requirements for each of them can be found below. 

Important note: apart from the required coursework, ALL minors require a minimum of 8 hours completed in-residence; the Japanese certificate requires a minimum of 12 hours completed in-residence. Transferred courses and courses claimed through credit-by-exam, APA, etc., are not considered in-residence.

East Asian Language minors and certificate:

Chinese Minor

Requirements: completion of all lower-division CHI coursework (CHI 606, 607, 312K, 312L or CHI 604 + 612) + one upper-division CHI course

 

Japanese Certificate

Requirements: completion of all lower-division JPN coursework (JPN 601D, 610D, 611D, 317C) + one upper-division JPN course

 

Korean Minor

Requirements: completion of all lower-division KOR coursework (KOR 606, 607, 312K, 312L) + KOR 320K

 

South Asian Language minors:

(only applicable for students in the 2022-24 academic catalog or later)

 

Bengali Minor

(Currently unavailable)

 

Hindi Minor

Requirements: completion of all lower-division HIN coursework (HIN 506, 507, 312K, 312L or HIN 604 + 612) + HIN 330

 

Malayalam Minor

Requirements: completion of all lower-division MAL coursework (MAL 506, 507, 312K, 312L) + one upper-division MAL course 

 

Sanskrit Minor

Requirements: completion of all lower-division SAN coursework (SAN 506, 507, 312K, 312L) + one upper-division SAN course

 

Tamil Minor

Requirements: completion of all lower-division TAM coursework (TAM 506, 507, 312K, 312L) + one upper-division TAM course 

 

Urdu Minor

Requirements: completion of all lower-division URD coursework (URD 506, 507, 312K, 312L or URD 604 + 612) + URD 330

 

Asian Religions Minor:

Requirements: R S 310 (Introduction to the Study of Religion), ANS 301R (History of Religions of Asia), and nine additional ANS hours (3 courses), including six upper-division, that can be identified by consulting the Area List published for each academic semester.
